Viroinval
Country of rivers and deep forests, fruit of several centuries of collaboration between man and nature, the town of Viroinval is rich in a remarkable rural and human heritage. Shaped by natural forces over millennia, the landscapes are embellished with a diverse and particularly well-preserved nature. The men have gradually adapted their living and working environment, in harmony with their environment.
Viroinval is located south of Entre Sambre et Meuse, on the French border, halfway between Charleville in France and Charleroi, east of the municipalities of Chimay and Couvin and accessible by the Nationale 5.
Viroinval is a name imagined during the merger of the municipalities in 1977; it brings together the villages of Nismes, Dourbes, Olloy-Sur-Viroin, Vierves-sur-Viroin, Treignes, Mazée, Oignies-en-Thiérache as well as Le Mesnil and has a little less than 5,800 inhabitants.
Straddling three geological regions, Viroinval is characterized by the diversity of natural environments: Fagne schisteuse, Calestienne and Ardenne generate a marked relief, offering numerous landscapes and remarkable points of view over which the Viroin valley extends.
The municipality of Viroinval is a territory of 12,000 hectares of high biological and geographical interest recognized as a "natural park" by the Walloon Region since 1998. Coming to Viroinval is therefore going to the Viroin-Hermeton natural park offering landscapes, exceptional flora and fauna.
Deprived of industry and in search of economic activities, the town has resolutely turned towards the development of sustainable tourism for the past fifteen years. Conscious that its biggest tourist attraction is its natural heritage, the municipality of Viroinval, in partnership with the associative sector, tries to make discover, appreciate and respect its wealth to the population and to tourists.
